Introduction to IoGas and Applied geochemistry of ore deposits

Dates: Monday 27 October at 11:30 – 18:00 Module 1 introduction to IoGas and Tuesday 28 October at 08:30 – 16:30 Module 2 Applied geochemistry of ore deposits
Venue: Hotel Hullu Poro, Levi

Introduction: Dive into the geochemistry of greenstone-hosted gold and Ni-Cu-PGE deposits, exploring their key characteristics and formation processes. This course emphasizes the application of multi-element ICP geochemistry for geochemically fingerprinting rock types and alteration facies. This will improve your ability to correlate from hole to hole, hence make more reliable 3D models of your mineral deposits. Identifying magmatic fractionation processes from the trace element patterns provides insight into the formation of the deposits.

Module 1

Introduction to IoGas Module is presented by Nick Oliver and James Cleverley and intended for participants who don’t have IoGas skills and who wish to participate Scott Halley’s Applied geochemistry of ore deposits short course module. Advanced users may skip this Module, but it is recommended.

Module 2

Participants will analyse drill hole data from gold and Ni-Cu-PGE deposits using ioGAS software, integrating assay data with geological logging information. Gain fresh insights into hydrothermal processes, including the role of locally sourced metals and sulphur, as well as the formation of mineralizing fluids through the transformation of low-temperature minerals.

Goal of the course:

Module 1

  • Data suitability and QAQC of data, types of geochemical (and other) data suitable for use in ioGAS, Data import, using ‘Data Doctor’, how to get up and running
  • Basic tools of data classification and functionality of embedded diagrams, visualization in ioGAS – 2D, 3D, down-hole, maps, grids
  • Linking other datasets within and around ioGAS – eg structural data
  • Introduction to data classification and geostatistics in ioGAS

 Module 2

  • how to use immobile trace elements to geochemically fingerprint rock types, and recognize fractionation patterns
  • how to use major elements to define hydrothermal alteration domains, and
  • how to define ore-type domains.

Who should attend: Professionals working with lithogeochemical data and ore deposits.

Course requirements for participants: Participants are required to bring their own laptop. Familiarity with ioGAS software would be useful but not essential. The materials presented will be available on-line a few days prior to the course for those attendees who want to follow along and take notes on their laptops during the event.
